About the Role 

 

SeaLink is seeking a skilled and safety-driven Master V & MED 2 Skipper to take the helm of Australia’s only dedicated ambulance vessel – the Medicat – servicing the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. This is a unique opportunity to combine your maritime expertise with a meaningful role that supports emergency medical response and community wellbeing.

 

As the Medicat Master, you’ll work closely with the Queensland Ambulance Service to ensure the safe, timely, and efficient transport of patients and paramedics across the bay. You’ll operate a high-speed jet vessel in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, while upholding the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and customer care.

The roster for the role is

  • 7 days on: 06:30–18:30 (Monday to Sunday)
  • 7 days off
  • 7 nights on: 18:30–06:30 (Monday to Sunday)

Due to the on-call nature of the night shifts, accommodation is provided at SeaLink’s facilities to ensure rapid response capability.

 

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and navigate the Medicat vessel in line with maritime regulations and SeaLink’s Safety Management System
  • Respond rapidly and effectively to emergency callouts in collaboration with QAS
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of patients, paramedics, and crew on board
  • Lead and support crew to maintain a high standard of service and readiness
  • Maintain compliance with all relevant laws, policies, and procedures
  • Adapt to a structured rotating roster, including day and night shifts

 About You

You are a confident and capable maritime professional with a calm, decisive approach under pressure. You thrive in a team-oriented environment and bring a strong safety focus, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to community service.

 

You will demonstrate:

  • Proven leadership and vessel-handling skills
  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness
  • A professional, safety-conscious, and customer-focused attitude
  • Flexibility to work a rotating roster, including nights and weekends
  • The ability to work harmoniously and professionally with emergency services

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master V Certificate of Competency – essential
  • MED 2 qualification – essential
  • Jet boat experience – highly regarded
  • Current Certificate of Medical Fitness for Near Coastal Seafarers (AMSA Form 1850)
  • Senior First Aid and CPR certification
  • Demonstrated understanding of maritime legislation and safe operating procedures
