Naval Architect

About the Role

Reporting to the General Manager Marine, the Naval Architect will be responsible for providing technical leadership of services to support the design, configuration, quality assurance and construction of new vessel fleet and contribute to a range of projects that supports the effective management of the existing vessel fleet and marine infrastructure across Sealink Marine and Tourism.

A critical role that will look to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage through the identification, development and deployment of new and existing technology into operational business. This is a National role which is ideally to be based in Brisbane however other major capital city locations will be considered for the right candidate.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Liaising with external naval architects, ship builders, other engineering disciplines, equipment suppliers and certification experts to ensure the design and construction of our vessels meet design deliverables, compliance and performance requirements
  • Contributing, participating and where required lead engineering projects from concept through to delivery
  • Proactively promoting quality, environmental responsibility & safety within the workplace
  • Driving innovation and continuous improvement in processes and design including identifying, evaluating and enabling emerging technologies or capabilities towards a zero emissions future
  • Developing and implementing quality assurance processes for the control of vessel and infrastructure design, construction and repair.
  • Performing engineering investigations, including the triage of technical issues and develop technical documentation such as reports and specifications
  • Conducting Technical Risk Assessments and System Safety engineering activities to support assigned projects
  • Maintain RINA or equivalent membership

About you

With a solid vessel design and building background, you will be instrumental in developing and understanding project requirements and constraints, formalising specifications, developing quality assurance processes to deliver vessels that meet the business’ objectives and at times direct the project management of vessel construction.

 

You will need to be commercially astute, enjoy working across the broader business and be an exceptional communicator and consensus builder to contribute to the success of team.

 

You will be required to travel to SeaLink Marine & Tourism locations throughout Australia to deliver this role successfully.

Skills, qualifications and experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in ship design, construction and repair. (Experience with high-speed vessels, highly desirable but not essential).
  • Bachelor of Engineering – naval architecture, marine engineering or mechanical engineer with a passion for, and experience in, the marine sector.
  • Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD (AutoCAD) and other specialist software as required to produce and review design information.
  • Knowledge and experience researching and applying the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) standards for vessel design, construction and equipment.
  • Experience in the delivery of engineering and technical documentation including applying international classification rules.
  • Vessel fire and safety systems design experience.
  • Experience in tendering and procurement and post construction acceptance will be well regarded.
  • Excellent project management skills and strong interpersonal skills
